Hiya Foodies!
Lately I have been eating the same kinds of fruits over and over and over and I have been getting burnt out on them. Some of you might have this same problem. Before you give up on eating fruit because it is the "same old boring flavors" try some that you've never tried before. I have given myself a mission. To try atleast 10 new/crazy sounding fruits by the end of next summer (summer of 2012). The reason I am picking the end of next summer is because we are starting to enter winter and while a lot of fruits grow great in the summer, a lot of fruits only grow well in the summer.
Here is a list of some crazy fruit that I have never heard of that I might want to try:
1) Rambutan
Native to Malay Archipelago, Southeast Asia
Coming from an evergreen tree, the Rambutan fruit resembles the Lychees, have a leathery red skin and are covered with spines. Rambutan is a popular garden fruit tree and one of the most famous in Southeast Asia. The fruit is sweet and juicy, being commonly found in jams or available canned.
2)Jackfruit
Native to southwestern India, Bangladesh, Philippines and Sri Lanka
Jackfruit is a common fruit for Asia and Australia. The juicy pulp around the seeds have a taste similar to pineapple, but milder.
3)Passion Fruit
Native to South America, grown in India, New Zealand, Brazil, etc
The passion fruit has a soft, juicy interior full of seeds, being commonly found in juices to boost their flavors. There are two types of passion fruit: the golden one (maracuyá), similar to a grapefruit and the dark purple passion fruit (gulupa), comparable in terms of size with a lemon. However, the latter ones have been reported as being mildly poisonous.
4)Lychee
Native to southern China, found in India, Taiwan
Coming from an evergreen tree, the lychee or litchi are small white flesh fruits, covered in a red rind, rich in vitamin C and with a grape-like texture.
5)Star fruit
Native to Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka
The star fruit comes from the carambola tree. The golden-yellow fruit is crunchy, sweet, with a taste of pineapples, apples and kiwis combined. There are two kinds of star fruits – acidulate and sweet, both rich in vitamin C.
6) Mangosteen
Native to the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas.
The fruits are purple, creamy, described as citrus with a hint of peach. It is rich in antioxidants, some scientists even suggesting it can lower risk against certain human diseases, such as cancer.
7)Kumquat
Native to China
The kumquats or cumquats are small edible fruits resembling oranges that grow in a tree related to the Citrus. As with most of the fruits in the Citrus family, the kumquats are eaten raw. They are often used in marmalade and jelly but also in alcoholic drinks such as liquor. The Taiwanese add it to their teas, while others boil it and use it as a remedy for sore throats.
8)Durian
Native to Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia
Also known as the “King of Fruits,” Durian has a very particular odor, a unique taste and is covered by a hard husk. Having a disagreeable smell, compared to skunk spray or sewage the fruit is forbidden in hotels and public transportations in Southeast Asia. Still, the whole experience is worth it, considering the absolutely divine taste of the Durian.
9)Dragon Fruit
Native to Mexico and Central and South America
Dragon fruit, strawberry pear or pitaya is a fruit of several cactus species with a sweet delicate taste and creamy pulp.
10)African cucumber
Native to Kalahari Desert, Africa
The African cucumber, horned melon or melano is a fruit that can be best described as melon with horns. The dark green pulp reminds one of bananas, limes, passion fruit and cucumber. It is often used for decorating food but also in smoothies and sundaes.
There's my list! I got it off the Hotel Traveling Blog so that just shows how some research can keep you interested on eating FRUIT!!!! Check out my next post for pictures of each one!

The Grab-It-and-Go Solution!!!
Hey everyone, I'm the AWESOME AVOCADO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love eating fresh foods and veggies because after I eat them I always FEEL better. I feel like I could run a triathlon, ok I won't go that far, but I do feel light and energized as opposed to sluggish and tired after a candy bar. I love being outdoors and playing with my pets but one of my favorite things to do is SWIM! I live to swim!!!
I always hear "eat right," but sometimes it isn't that easy. When you are on your way out the door you just grab something to eat and it is usually the first thing you see. That can sometimes lead to you eating things that aren't nutritious. I have this problem a lot so I have found some ways that I can avoid the grab-it-and-go problem.
1)When you are on your way out the door, grab the same things (try to be healthy with an apple, banana, yogurt, etc.) around the same time because the routine might help you fill up faster plus it reduces temptation
2) Watch your portion size!
3) Stock your car up with healthy snacks (bottled water is always good too!)
I hope these tips help you like they have helped me and I look forward to keep posting!

Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy!
Hey guys! So one of my favorite summer salads is fruit salad. You can make it anyway you want it! All you need is some amazing fresh fruit from your Farmer's Market! Grab some strawberries, blackberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and any other of your favorite local fruit. Take it home, wash it off, cut it up, and toss it in a bowl. You can chill it in the fridge or just eat it then!
Think about adding low- fat vanilla yogurt, walnuts, or just a little bit of sugar. Enjoy your summer fruit salad!!

The Foody is our way to show what amazing food opportunities are right around the corner. We'll be giving you tips, recipes, nutrition info, videos from our local farmer's market and so much more! Eating local not only tastes better, but its better for the earth. Think about where your lunch came from. Did you have oranges from Florida, potatoes from Idaho, or any processed food? Chances are its traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to make it to your plate. Our mission is to reduce our foodprint. Your foodprint is how far your food travels to make it to your plate. Think about how much gas it takes to bring those Florida oranges to your local grocery store, then for you to drive there to buy the oranges. Your food has traveled a long way!
